N-P-K: What Your Cannabis Plant Actually Needs

Every bag of fertilizer, every bottle of cannabis nutrients, carries three numbers on its label. Those numbers represent the percentage by weight of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the product — in that order, always. This N-P-K ratio tells you almost everything you need to know about when and how to use a nutrient product, and understanding what each element does gives you the ability to diagnose problems and make informed decisions rather than guessing.

Nitrogen — The Engine of Vegetative Growth

Nitrogen is the nutrient most directly associated with leafy, green vegetative growth. It is a core component of chlorophyll — the molecule that allows plants to capture light and convert it into energy — and of the amino acids that make up plant proteins. When nitrogen is abundant and other conditions are met, plants grow rapidly, develop deep green foliage, and build the structural mass needed to support heavy flowers later in the grow.

Nitrogen demand is highest during the vegetative stage and the first weeks of flowering, when the plant is still building its frame. As flowering progresses, nitrogen demand drops significantly. In the final two to four weeks before harvest, most experienced growers reduce nitrogen to near zero — a practice often called the flush or fade. This reduction, combined with the natural senescence of leaves, allows the plant to reabsorb stored nitrogen and is associated with improved flavor and a cleaner final product.

Nitrogen deficiency shows up as yellowing that starts at the lower, older leaves and works its way up the plant. Nitrogen toxicity — overfeeding — produces unnaturally dark, clawed leaves and can lock out other nutrients by disrupting soil pH and microbial activity.

Phosphorus — Root Builder and Flower Fuel

Phosphorus plays two distinct and critical roles at two distinct stages of the plant's life. Early in the grow, it drives root development — strong root systems establish quickly and draw water and nutrients more efficiently throughout the plant's life. During flowering, phosphorus becomes the primary driver of bud site development, flower density, and resin production. High-phosphorus feeds during mid-to-late flower are a near-universal practice among growers pushing for maximum yield and potency.

Phosphorus deficiency typically shows as purpling of leaf stems and undersides, slow growth, and poor root development. It is more common in cold grow environments because phosphorus uptake slows significantly as root zone temperatures drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Potassium — The Regulator

Potassium does not drive growth the way nitrogen does or fuel flowering the way phosphorus does, but it is essential to virtually every plant process. It regulates water uptake through the stomata, activates enzymes needed for photosynthesis, supports the transport of sugars from leaves to developing flowers, and plays a central role in building strong cell walls and disease resistance. Plants with adequate potassium are sturdier, more resilient, and more efficient.

Potassium deficiency produces brown, crispy leaf edges starting at the tips and margins of older leaves — often confused with nutrient burn by newer growers. The key difference is that potassium deficiency spreads inward over time while nutrient burn typically affects the leaf tips of the newest growth.

Secondary and Micronutrients

Beyond the primary N-P-K triad, cannabis requires several secondary macronutrients — calcium, magnesium, and sulfur — in significant amounts, as well as a range of micronutrients including iron, zinc, manganese, boron, copper, and molybdenum in much smaller quantities.

Calcium and magnesium (often sold together as Cal-Mag) are the secondary nutrients most commonly deficient in cannabis grows, particularly in coco coir, soft water environments, and reverse osmosis setups. Calcium deficiency causes brown spots on leaves and weak, hollow stems. Magnesium deficiency produces interveinal chlorosis — yellowing between the leaf veins while the veins themselves stay green.

Relative ratios — actual ppm depends on your medium. Soil growers typically run 25-40% lower numbers than coco/hydro because the soil holds and releases nutrients between feeds.
Feed Schedule Framework

Veg: High N, moderate P, moderate K. Early flower: Lower N, increasing P and K. Mid-flower: Low N, high P, high K. Late flower (final 2 weeks): Reduce all nutrients significantly or flush with plain water to encourage leaf fade and clean the medium before harvest.

Organic vs. Synthetic Nutrients

Synthetic nutrients are mineral salts derived from chemical manufacturing. They are immediately available to plant roots and allow very precise control over what the plant receives. They are generally less expensive per application and more consistent in their composition. The tradeoff is that synthetic salts can build up in growing media over time, requiring periodic flushing to reset salt levels, and some growers believe they produce a harsher final product than organic inputs.

Organic nutrients are derived from natural sources — bat guano, fish emulsion, kelp meal, bone meal, worm castings, and dozens of other inputs. They are broken down by microbial activity in the medium before becoming available to roots, which means they act more slowly and are harder to dial in precisely. However, they feed the soil ecosystem rather than the plant directly, supporting long-term soil health, and most organic growers report that properly cured organic flower has a more complex flavor profile.

The practical answer for most growers is to use what is available, affordable, and appropriate for your medium. Soil and coco growers have access to both approaches. Hydro growers running recirculating systems should stick with mineral nutrients because organic matter in a reservoir creates ideal conditions for bacterial growth and slimed root systems.
