Understand The Science Behind the Way You Consume Cannabis

Same strain, same THC, same person — four wildly different highs. The variable isn’t the plant. It’s how it reaches your bloodstream.

Cannabis isn’t one experience. It’s four, depending on how you consume it. The same strain, the same THC content, the same person — and the effect can range from a light creative lift to a full-body tidal wave that lasts the better part of a day. That’s not marketing copy. That’s biology.

Bioavailability: Why Not All THC Reaches You

Bioavailability refers to the percentage of a substance that actually enters your bloodstream and produces an active effect. For cannabis, it varies dramatically by method. When you smoke or vape, roughly 25 to 35 percent of THC reaches your bloodstream. The rest is lost to combustion, exhaled, or metabolized before it acts. Onset is near-instant — within seconds to minutes — because THC absorbs directly through the lungs into the blood and travels to the brain almost immediately.

Bioavailability by Method

Smoking / Vaping: 25–35% • Onset: seconds to minutes
Edibles: 4–12% • Onset: 30–90 minutes
Sublingual (tinctures): 20–30% • Onset: 15–45 minutes
Concentrates (dabs): up to 75% • Onset: seconds

The Liver’s Role in Edibles

Edibles have the lowest bioavailability — between four and twelve percent — but the most potent and longest-lasting effect. Why? Because when you eat cannabis, THC passes through the digestive system and is processed by the liver, which converts it into 11-hydroxy-THC. This metabolite crosses the blood-brain barrier more readily than delta-9-THC and produces a deeper, longer-lasting effect. The same 10mg edible can feel dramatically more intense than a joint with equivalent THC content. Add in the delayed onset of 30 to 90 minutes, and you have a recipe for overconsumption if you’re not patient.

“11-hydroxy-THC crosses the blood-brain barrier more readily than inhaled THC — which is why edibles hit harder and last longer.”

Four routes, four experiences: inhalation, edible, sublingual, and concentrate — each with its own onset and intensity.

Vaping vs. Combustion

Vaping heats cannabis to a temperature that releases cannabinoids and terpenes as vapor without burning plant material. This means fewer combustion byproducts and a cleaner terpene expression. The high is comparable to smoking in onset and duration, but many users describe it as more clear-headed and less heavy. For people sensitive to smoke, vaping reduces irritation while delivering a comparable effect profile. The caveat: vape cartridge quality matters enormously. Low-quality hardware or cutting agents have caused documented lung issues (EVALI). Buy from licensed dispensaries.

Concentrates: Maximum Potency

Dabs — wax, shatter, live resin, rosin — are concentrated cannabis extracts with THC levels between 70 and 90 percent. The bioavailability is high and the onset near-instant, producing an intense, short-to-medium-duration effect that rewards users who know their tolerance. The terpene profiles in high-quality live resin are extraordinarily expressive, making concentrates a sensory experience as much as a pharmacological one.

Understanding the science doesn’t take the magic out of cannabis. It makes the decisions smarter. When you know why an edible hits differently, you choose it for the right reasons and dose it with the right patience. When you understand bioavailability, you stop wondering why the same strain on a vape feels lighter than a joint. The plant is consistent. The method is the variable.
